Collaborative Method of Teaching
Collaborative Method of Teaching 👯
- Collaborative learning is an educational approach to teaching and learning that involves groups of learners working together to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product.
- Collaborative learning is based on the idea that learning is a naturally social act in which the participants talk among themselves. It is through the task that learning occurs.
👉The term collaborative learning refers to an instruction method in which
students at various performance levels work together in small groups towards a
common goal.
The students are responsible for one another’s learning as well as their
own. Thus, the success of one student helps other students to be successful.
👉ELEMENTS OF COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
Five elements define true cooperative learning in
groups:
- Face-to-face interaction---Face-to-face interaction is a bit counter-intuitive because it doesn't necessarily mean face-to-face as in 'in-person'. It actually just refers to direct interaction. So, it can be literally face-to-face, or it could be over the phone, on chat, via Skype, through email, etc. It's just referring to the fact that group members have to actually interact to cooperate.
- Positive interdependence---The second element is positive interdependence, which means that the group members rely on each other and can only succeed together.
- Individual accountability---As an interdependent group, each individual is responsible for his or her own work and can be held accountable for that work.
- Cooperative skills---The fourth element of collaborative learning is cooperative skills. The group members must be able to work together, but the ability to do so doesn't always come naturally; sometimes these skills need to be taught.
- Group processing--- The Final element is group processing, which refers to the fact that the group needs to monitor itself to ensure that the group, as a whole, is working together effectively.
👉ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT COLLABORATIVE TEACHING LEARNING PROCESS
- Learning is a functioning, helpful procedure.
- Learning relies upon ironic settings:
- Subjects are disparate
- Learning is immanently convivial
- Objectives for Education
- Inclusion
- Participation and cooperation
- Communal Responsibility

1. Think Pair Share
This is one of the most widely recognized kinds of collaborative learning. It is
a low-exertion, low-risk methodology for contracted joint effort and dynamic
learning. In this sort of learning, subjects are required to work autonomously, share
their thoughts with others, consider peer reactions, and at last take part in discourses
in a way that begins to combine a trade.
2. Catch Up
In this method, at the time of taking the lecture, the teacher stops suddenly and asks the students to compare their notes with those of other students and ask questions (if any) on the doubtful points for clarification.
3. Fishbowl
- Ask students to sit in groups of three.
- Assign roles. For example, the person on the left takes one position on a topic for debate, the person on the right takes the opposite position, and the person in the middle takes notes and decides which side is the most convincing and provides an argument for his or her choice.
- Debrief by calling on a few groups to summarize their discussions.
5-6 case study proposals are prepared by the teacher, with similar levels of difficulty. The proposals are assigned to different groups and the groups are provided proper time for analysis. Thereafter, a progress report is demanded by the teacher. Lastly, once the work is completed, the report is presented before the class.
5. Team-based Learning
Learners are divided into various groups by the teacher and a particular task is assigned to them. Once the task is completed, they need to appear in an examination at a group level like a quiz. And based on the group consensus they have to answer the question and name the member who has given that answer. Finally, the teacher explains the difficulties and resolves all the doubts that the students have.
👉How to start with Collaborative learning
1. Create collaborative learning activities
2. Learning activities should be multilayered
3. Select students to work together
4. Form teams with proper size for effective collaboration
5. Give everyone a chance
6. Make clear goals and assign Role
7. Give each group different tasks
👉Advantages of Collaborative Learning Strategy
1. Boost problem-solving skills
2. Improve decision-making skills and time management
3. Develop productivity and efficiency
4. Increase critical thinking skills
